University Honors Program to present showcase on ‘migrations and borders’ theme
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The University Honors Program on Wednesday, April 19, will showcase faculty research and teaching and student research around the theme of “Migrations and Borders.”
Each year, the honors program takes up a theme that is explored in a cluster of courses, distinguished speaker series and collaborative projects across campus. For the 2022-2023 school year, the theme is “Migrations and Borders.”
The faculty showcase is from 3 to 5 p.m. in Morris Library’s Honors Lounge, Room 180. The event is free and open to the public.
Faculty with presentations are:
- Mehdi Ashayeri, assistant professor, architecture, College of Arts and Media, “Designing Smart and Sustainable Cities: Promises and Challenges.”
- Darryl Clark, assistant professor, musical theater and dance, College of Arts and Media, “Bodies Moving Borders: The Birth and Development of Tap, Jazz and Hip-Hop Dance in the United States.”
- Jon Davey, professor, architecture, College of Arts and Media, “Design Theories of Buckminster Fuller.”
- JP Reed, associate professor, sociology, College of Liberal Arts. “We Shall Overcome. The History, Possibilities, and Continued Significance of the Civil Rights Movement.”
- Charles Ruffner, professor, forestry, College of Agriculture, Life and Physical Sciences, “Pyrogeography: The History of Fire on Earth.”
Students whose research will be presented are:
- David Hernandez, senior, zoology and theater, “Species Diversity of Ants across the Central Mississippi River.”
- Myla Croft, senior, political science and global studies with a pre-law track, “Politics Prevails: A Comparative Analysis of Trump’s and Biden’s Executive Actions of Mexican Asylum Seekers.”
