SIU’s Paul Simon Institute to host journalist, national security analyst
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Philip Taubman, a lecturer at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation and the author of a new book on former Secretary of State George Shultz, will join Southern Illinois University’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute for a virtual conversation on April 13.
Taubman will join John Shaw, institute director, for an 11 a.m. conversation via Zoom “Diplomacy, Statesmanship, and the End of the Cold War.” The conversation is part of the institute’s Understanding Our New World series.
The conversation will focus on Taubman’s book “In the Nation’s Service: The Life and Times of George Shultz” as well as one of his earlier books “The Partnership: Five Cold Warriors and Their Quest to Ban the Bomb.”
Prior to his work at Stanford, Taubman was a reporter and editor at The New York Times for nearly 30 years, specializing in national security issues.
“Phil Taubman is one of our nation’s most perceptive and penetrating national security analysts. His insights will help us better understand how the Cold War came to a peaceful conclusion and what we can now to navigate our current complex challenges,” Shaw said.
