CTE to host surround sound listening event to celebrate Pink Floyd
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Center for Teaching Excellence is hosting a unique listening opportunity at 7 p.m. Friday, March 31, in Lawson Hall, Room 171, to celebrate the 50th anniversary release Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon.” The critically acclaimed album has sold more than 45 million copies worldwide and is the fourth-best selling album in history.
CTE is inviting the Carbondale community to experience the recording in Dolby Atmos surround sound. A brief introduction and technical demonstration of the Dolby Atmos audio system will precede the listening experience. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.
CTE installed a Dolby-Atmos-capable sound system in Lawson Hall in 2018. System designer Kelly Caringer, CTE’s chief instructional media systems engineer, notes that although spatial audio is gaining in popularity and Dolby Atmos is becoming a household name, most people have not yet had an opportunity to experience the immersive technology.
“We see the Dolby brand advertised almost everywhere we look, but commercial movie theaters in our region are not Atmos-equipped,” he said. “SIU understands the importance of providing our students with the opportunity to study films and music recordings the way in which they were meant to be experienced, and we are proud to also extend this opportunity to the Carbondale community.”
