Protecting yourself from STIs

Nationwide, the number of STI cases has been gradually increasing, and our region and the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus are not immune. STIs (sexually transmitted infections) can have serious long-term consequences, including infertility and death, but STIs can be prevented and treated, said Dr. Andrew Riffey, medical chief of staff at Student Health Services.

Riffey offers the following advice:

The most common STIs that are being seen include chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. These diseases are affecting everyone in the SIU community, so everyone needs to be aware of the risks and how to prevent infections, test and be treated.

Prevention is the primary way to protect yourself. The correct and consistent use of condoms can help prevent the spread of STIs. Low-cost birth control options are available at SIU Student Health Services. Testing can also help prevent the spread of STIs in the community.

It is important to know the symptoms. The most common symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea are painful urination, vaginal discharge, penile discharge and lower abdominal pain. Syphilis can cause firm painless sores around the genital area, rectum or mouth. However, many people do not have any symptoms when they test positive for STIs.

To help our students look after their health, the Student Health Center provides testing during normal business hours. Students can schedule an appointment online at the Saluki Health Portal or by calling 618-453-3311. Students can also make an appointment with a medical provider at the Student Health Center to discuss their risk and what testing would best suit them.
