WSIU to hold free film screening on Sunday

A free screening and discussion of a documentary that profiles the work of a Vancouver-based community organization helping people affected by the fentanyl epidemic will be shown at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Carbondale Public Library, 405 W. Main St.

WSIU Public Broadcasting and the Carbondale Public Library will host another Indie Lens Pop-Up film screening with “Love in the Time of Fentanyl.” The documentary is “an intimate, observational look beyond the stigma of injection drug users, revealing the courage of those facing tragedy in a neighborhood often referred to as ground zero of the overdose crisis.”

A Q&A with special guest Eric Spurling of Overdose Prevention Society, the community organization depicted in the film, will follow. Representatives of local agencies that provide harm reduction services are encouraged to exchange resources and information, and Brent Van Ham, a program coordinator with the SIU School of Medicine’s Center for Rural Health will conduct NARCAN training.

The program is open to the public; individuals with disabilities are welcomed and accommodations are available by calling 618-453-4344.

The film will also premiere on PBS’s “Independent Lens” television series at 9 p.m. Feb.13 and will be available on the PBS Video app.
