Media Advisory – SIU will pin new teachers during Dec. 14 ceremony

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A group of 38 graduates from Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Teacher Education Program will be recognized during a special pinning ceremony at 5 p.m. on Dec. 14 in Shryock Auditorium. Reporters, photographers, and news crews are invited to cover the event.

Extension preparation for teaching

While completing content classes within the colleges hosting their majors at SIU, the students begin practicing the art of teaching during part-time clinical placements their junior year. After three semesters of practical experience, they devote their final semester to full-time student teaching, working in numerous schools located throughout the region.

Graduates from teaching programs across campus will be honored at the ceremony, which marks the final educational milestone on their path to becoming professional educators. Also attending in recognition of the students’ accomplishments will be their clinical supervisors and the cooperating teachers who mentored the students as they put into practice the lessons they learned at SIU while student teaching in partner school districts.

A reception will be held following the ceremony.
