Family Eco Festival set for Sept. 24

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A Southern Illinois University-affiliated family event aimed at helping science teachers across the region is set for later this month at a local winery.

Teachers from SIU’s River Region Master Teaching Fellows Program will host the Family Eco Festival, set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 24 at Alto Vineyards, Alto Pass.

The event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit organization Innovations in STEM Education. Money raised will be distributed to Southern Illinois teachers in need of science materials.

The event’s theme is environmental sustainability, with hands-on science activities offered throughout the day. Demonstrations and activities will include recycling relays, eco-arts and crafts, solar energy displays, microscopes, Emriver stream table, composting and more.

The event also includes live music beginning at 11 a.m. with Buckn' John. Tim Crosby takes the stage at 2 p.m. followed by Carter and Connelly & Friends at 3:45 p.m.

A food truck and kid-friendly snacks and soft drinks also will be available throughout the day.

The sponsors for the event include Alto Vineyards, Southern Illinois Community Foundation and the National Science Foundation. Organizers plan to make Family Eco Festival an annual event.
