Open forums with College of Arts and Media dean candidates begin Tuesday
Five candidates for dean of the College of Arts and Media at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will meet with faculty, staff and students during a series of open forums beginning Tuesday, April 19. The candidates, in alphabetical order, are:
- Michelle Carpenter, professor and chair of the visual arts department at the University of Colorado Denver.
- Hong Cheng, professor and dean, School of Communication at Loyola University Chicago.
- Jeffery Elwell, vice president for academic affairs at the University of the Ozarks.
- Daryl Moore, professor at William Paterson University.
- Michael Thrasher, associate dean and director of graduate studies in the College of Music, Florida State University.
During their respective forums, each candidate will discuss their vision and goals for the College of Arts and Media followed by a Q&A. The open forums are in conjunction with each of the candidates’ interviews.
Dean has numerous responsibilities
The dean is the chief academic and administrative officer for the College of Arts and Media and reports to the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.
The dean works with the faculty and staff in the development and maintenance of the college’s programs and policies and is responsible for its academic program, fiscal management, personnel, external relations, recruitment and retention, among other areas. Each candidate must have an outstanding record as a teacher and scholar and a strong record of academic leadership and administrative experience.

The virtual open forums for each candidate will be from 2 to 2:50 p.m. for faculty and staff, and from 3 to 3:50 p.m. for students.
