Media Advisory: About 700 regional students set to attend Math Field Day at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Organizers estimate 700 regional high school students, along with their teachers, will attend the annual Math Field Day set for Tuesday, March 29, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The competition, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Banterra Center, will include students from 26 regional high schools in Illinois and Missouri. Students will complete a mathematics test, designed, presented and scored by SIU mathematics faculty.

An awards ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. First- and second-place awards of $75 and $50, respectively, will go to top-scoring students in the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes. Trophies and ribbons will go to top-scoring teams in three classes based on enrollment size.

Organizers also plan a program for teachers beginning at 10 a.m. at the Tedrick Auditorium, Boydston Center Room 189. Speakers for the program are Daniel Davidson, teaching assistant in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences; Nelson Fernandes, a senior in mechanical engineering and a leader in SIU’s Green Roof Project; and Anna Carter, a junior in mechanical engineering.
