College of Arts and Media to host “lightning” talks on truth

Faculty and students are encouraged to submit proposals by March 4 to present seven-minute talks on their views of truth during the College of Arts and Media’s “Festival of Ideas” in April.

The college is accepting proposals for lightning talks addressing “truth” for presentations beginning at 7 p.m., April 14 in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Each participant will have seven minutes to present their lightning talk, followed by Q&A. Organizers are seeking presentations that focus on exploring “truth” from a range of perspectives and approaches — from the arts, humanities and the sciences; from literary, philosophical, psychological, medical, aesthetics and other forms of inquiry.

More program information is at mcma.siu.edu/_common/documents/what-is-truth.pdf or by contacting Robert Spahr, School of Media Arts interim director, at rspahr@siu.edu or Richard Kelley, School of Music interim director, at kelley2@siu.edu.

The proposal submission deadline is March 4. Proposals, submitted in a single PDF abstract of 500 words or less, must address:

  • Concept of truth in relationship to the entrants’ scholarly/creative work.
  • Areas of investigation and questions the presentation will raise.
  • Biography (200 words or less).

The proposal abstract and biography should be emailed to Stephanie Ritter, School of Media Arts, at steph.ritter@siu.edu.
