Media Advisory: Ukrainian, Russian experts available to discuss ongoing situation

As the situation in Ukraine and Russia continues to develop, Southern Illinois University Carbondale has three experts in the region’s politics and history available to assist reporters and news crews. These experts have researched and written about Ukraine, Russia and East Central Europe, and two of them have spent time in Ukraine and published several articles on Ukrainian politics. The experts — from the Department of Political Science and the Department of History — with contact information to arrange for interviews, include:

Stephen Bloom, associate professor, political science. Bloom specializes in politics of ethnicity and nationalism in the former Soviet Union. He has taught and conducted research in Ukraine under the Fulbright Scholar Program. He can be reached at bloom@siu.edu.

Stephen Shulman, associate professor, political science. Shulman teaches courses in international relations, international security, international political economy, American foreign policy and ethnic politics. He has an area specialization in Ukraine, where he has taught and conducted field research. He can be reached at shulman@siu.edu or 618-453-3194.

Theodore R. Weeks, professor, history. He teaches courses in world, European, Eastern European, Polish and Russian history. His research interests focus on nationality and ethnicity, in particular in the context of East Central Europe. He can be reached at tadeusz@siu.edu or 618-453-7874.
