Proposals for women’s conference due Jan. 31

Proposals are being accepted for “Advocates and Allies: The 2022 SIU Conference on Women.”

The conference theme is how women and gender minorities may ally with, advocate for, and support one another. The conference will take place from noon to 8 p.m. on March 18 and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 19 in the Student Center. Accepted presenters will be notified on or before Feb. 4.

Sessions will be 45 minutes each. The planning committee remains attentive to COVID-19 pandemic and will adjust to a virtual format, if needed. Submissions are open to all, regardless of whether the person is affiliated with SIU or not.

This cross-disciplinary conference is designed to educate and empower the SIU community and the region. Sessions will include round tables, research presentations, and personal and professional development workshops. The committee welcomes all genders who are interested in identifying and counteracting misogyny, especially as it intersects with racism, classism, ableism, cissexism, and heterosexism. Organizers encourage those who submit proposals to think critically, creatively, and broadly.

More information on the conference and submitting proposals is available at conferenceservices.siu.edu/conferences/womens-conference.php. Additional questions can be directed to Sandy Pensoneau Conway, associate professor and chair, communication studies and interim director of the women, gender, and sexuality studies program, at sandypc@siu.edu or Shelby Swafford, a doctoral candidate in communication studies, at sswafford@siu.edu.
