Media Advisory: Experts on anniversary of Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection

Southern Illinois University Carbondale has experts available to assist reporters and news crews with coverage of the first anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

The experts’ specialties include the historical significance and future impact that the riot has on the nation, American politics, contemporary extremist groups and the legal system.

These experts – from the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and SIU School of Law – with contact information to arrange for interviews, include:

John Jackson, Paul Simon Public Policy Institute visiting professor, has more than four decades of political expertise and research in presidential politics, campaigns and elections. He is available via Zoom and can be reached at 618-303-1240 or jsjacson@siu.edu.

Christopher Mullins, professor of criminology and criminal justice, specializes in political violence. He can discuss historical and contemporary U.S. extremist violence and extremist groups. He can be reached at mullinsc@siu.edu or 618-559-5289 and is available by telephone or Zoom. 

Sheila Simon, assistant professor in the SIU School of Law, returned to the university after serving as Illinois’ lieutenant governor from 2011 to 2015. She has taught classes on government ethics.
