SIU employees can win prizes, get fit in free challenge

The Willis Tower Stair-Roll Challenge is a unique opportunity for SIU faculty and staff to walk or roll their way to fitness in a fun way with the chance to win a prize.

It’s free, simple and it begins at midnight on Monday, Nov. 8. Here’s how it works. Either as an individual or a two-person team, you have 30 days to complete the challenge. The goal is to climb 2,109 stairs – the number of steps to the top of the Willis Tower in Chicago. That amounts to climbing 71 stairs daily (or 36 per person if on a team.) Track your progress any way you want to record it daily.

As an alternative, you can walk or roll your way to the top of the Willis Tower by finding a ramp that is available to you. Each trip to the top of the ramp counts as three stairs.

Participants are welcome to share photos of their “journey to the top of the tower” with the SIU Student Recreation Center on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #willistowerstepchallenge.” Fill in the form, found online, and then return it by Dec. 15 to Savanna Ashbaugh via campus mail, Mail Code 6717. The individual who climbs the most stairs will win a semester pass to the Recreation Center and the team that logs the greatest number of stairs climbed will claim a one-month unlimited membership pass for each team member. If there is a tie, the winner will be determined by the submission date.

No pre-registration is necessary. Find all of the details at rec.siu.edu/classes-and-events/willis-tower-step-challenge.php. For more information, contact Ashbaugh at smashba@siu.edu.
