Media advisory: 400 people to attend FFA conference at SIU

by Tim Crosby

Reporters, photographers and news crews are invited to cover an annual Southern Illinois University Carbondale agriculture event aimed at introducing area high school students to FFA activities.

Chancellor Austin A. Lane will make remarks during the opening ceremonies for the SIU FFA Greenhand and COLT Conference, a long-standing tradition at the university, set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Student Center Ballroom D.  About 400 people are expected to attend.

Held at SIU for decades by the College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences and its predecessors, SIU’s FFA Greenhand and COLT Conference introduces new District 5 FFA members, known as greenhands, to FFA and SIU. COLT stands for Chapter Officer Leadership Training and is aimed at helping older high school FFA members become leaders. A series of four workshops for the greenhands also is planned.

SIU student FFA members and “agbassadors” will lead the training sessions.

SIU is committed to protecting the community, so all those attending this event must wear masks and follow current campus and state pandemic safety protocols.
