Media advisory: SIU Ag Field Day to address latest trends
Reporters, photographers and news crews are invited to cover the 2021 SIU/ Illinois Nutrient Research & Education Council Agriculture Field Day at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, set for Friday, July 9, at University Farms, 2704 Union Hill Road. The event will go on rain or shine. About 100 people are expected to attend.
The annual event kicks off with a welcome at 9 a.m. by Eric Brevik, newly named dean of the College of Agricultural, Life and Physical Sciences at SIU. Joining Brevik for the welcome will be Richard Guebert, president of Illinois Farm Bureau, and Jeff Kirwan, Illinois NREC chair.
The event is co-sponsored by SIU, the Illinois Farm Bureau and Illinois NREC. Programs begin at 9:30 a.m. This year’s programs include:
“Optimizing Herbicide Use in Soybean Following a Cereal Rye Cover Crop,” by Karla Gage, associate professor, and Eric Miller, researcher, both in the School of Agricultural Sciences at SIU.
“Nitrogen Management of Corn and Next Generation Cover Cropping,” by Amir Sadeghpour, assistant professor in the School of Agricultural Sciences at SIU, and Joshua McGrath, extension associate professor of plant and soil sciences at the University of Kentucky.
“Conservation Practices for Water Quality: Cover Crops, Gypsum, Saturated Buffers and WASCOBs,” two presentations by Jon Schoonover and Karl Williard, professors in the School of Agricultural Sciences at SIU. WASCOB stands for water and soil control basins.
The program concludes with lunch at 12:30 p.m.
