by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Saluki Spirit Week 2021, set for March 14-20, offers a fun springtime respite for students with an array of special events.

Painting, games and more

An eclectic blend of activities is planned, including a “Bob Ross” Saluki-style painting class, a prize hunt, string art and crafts, food trucks, free snow cones and other treats.

There will be plenty of Saluki-style fun and games for students. On Tuesday, students will compete in the Student Recreation Center gym to see which team can stack the tallest column of crates. They can enjoy playing The Office Virtual Trivia with Brian Baumgartner, who portrays Kevin on the popular sitcom, on Wednesday night and win prizes, too. On Friday night, there will be two sessions of Saluki Spirit Bingo in the Student Center Ballrooms.

Students can also claim free “I lost my spring break and all I got was this T-shirt” shirts.  SIU, like many universities across the country, revised its spring 2021 semester schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SIU started classes a week later and replaced spring break with Saluki Spirit Week.

Sports galore

Saluki Spirit Week, as the name might imply, will also incorporate plenty of Saluki sports with home football, baseball and softball games scheduled throughout the week.
