Diversity workshops on hiring process scheduled

by Christi Mathis

Registration is now underway for a series of October workshops created to help assure that the university’s employment process has no implicit bias or discrimination and to enhance the workforce diversity on campus. Anyone involved in a campus employment search process is encouraged to attend a session.

“We want SIU to be an inclusive, favorable place to learn and work and these workshops will help employees understand how the hiring practices should be handled to assure a fair, unbiased process,” Ashley Followell, SIU equal opportunity officer, said.

The University Affirmative Action Office is hosting workshops specifically designed for:

  • Administrators – for administrators who manage searches and approve hiring proposals.
  • Search committees – for anyone who serves on a campus search committee.
  • Support staff – for personnel involved with scheduling, communications and paperwork during faculty and administrative/professional searches.

Some sessions will be offered virtually via Teams; some will also be available in-person at the Student Services Building with registration limited to the first 10 people to sign up in order to allow for social distancing.

Plans also call for offering the workshops on a regular, ongoing monthly basis in the future.
