Donations sought for ‘Recycle Your Bicycle’
An opportunity to help future Salukis in need starts Friday through a new bicycle donation program.
As part of the Saluki “Recycle Your Bicycle” initiative, donated bikes are being accepted beginning Friday through May 9. Donation times are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., May 1-8, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 9. The donation drop-off is outside Lentz Dining Hall and between Mae Smith Residence Hall and Rinella Field.
The collaborative effort by automotive technology students and University Housing has additional support from Saluki Spokes, the Student Recreation Center, and Touch of Nature Environmental Center.
The initiative includes repairing donated bicycles collected during move out at the end of the semester. The refurbished bicycles will be given for future use to SIU students who have economic need; giving them an environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
The project received a $4,740 grant from the Sustainability Council’s Green Fund earlier this month. In addition to bike repair costs, the funds will pay for the purchase a new bike lock and helmet for students who receive a bike in the fall.
Any surplus of donated bikes will go to the Student Recreation Center and Touch of Nature to use at their facilities.
