Tips for maintaining and finding your ‘voice’
As a part of World Voice Day, which is today, April 16, the Communication Disorders and Sciences program in the School of Health Sciences is providing tips for preventative care of your voice.
The importance of the human voice, vocal hygiene and the ability to communicate cannot be taken for granted, particularly during this transition to electronic communication channels such as Zoom and Facetime.
Tips for helping your voice include:
- Do Not Smoke.
- When you lose your voice, try to talk softly as whispering can further irritate the vocal folds.
- Stay hydrated.
- Excessive throat clearing and coughing can damage the vocal folds.
- Limit caffeine and alcohol intake.
- World Voice Day is an international health observance day for the human voice started in Brazil in 1999 and celebrated each year on April 16. The event, is sponsored by the School of Health Sciences and the campus chapter of the National Student Speech-Language and Hearing Association.
