Craft Shop offers Valentine’s Day help along with several spring workshops

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A Valentine’s Day Craft Sale and a wide array of workshops are happening at Southern Illinois University Carbondale this semester courtesy of the Student Center Craft Shop.

The public is invited to all.

Craft Sale is Feb. 14

The 23rd annual Valentine’s Day Craft Sale is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday in the Student Center Art Gallery.

Visitors will find for sale an eclectic assortment of arts and crafts from about 28 talented local artisans with diverse talents. Woodworking, pottery, candles, textiles and jewelry are just a few of the treasures you’ll find there. It’s a great opportunity to get a gift for your sweetheart or yourself. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

Many workshops

If you’ve ever thought about trying your hand at making something new and different or want to improve your crafting skills, be sure to check out the Craft Shop’s spring workshop lineup.

You can make your own block-printed Valentines or craft a colorful concrete mosaic stepping stone to add a pop of color to your garden. There are also opportunities to create handmade clay animal sculptures or planters, or make a 3D stained glass sculpture, a small wooden box or fused glass jewelry.

A series of paint nights is on the schedule too, giving participants a relaxing, fun evening of painting on canvas with acrylics. Each evening has a different theme, including florals, marbling and Pokémon.

Everyone welcome

Students, faculty, staff and community members may participate in the Craft Shop workshops. All take place in the shop, located on the lower level of SIU’s Student Center.
