Sign up now for inaugural Camp Little Giant Golf Scramble benefit
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Registration is open for the inaugural Camp Little Giant Golf Scramble, an April 18 event to benefit Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Camp Little Giant at Touch of Nature Environmental Center.
Camp Little Giant is one of the country’s first residential summer camps for children and adults with differing abilities, giving them a true summer camp experience specifically adapted for their capabilities.
Golfing in Makanda
The golf scramble benefit will take place at Keller’s Crossing at Stone Creek Country Club in Makanda on April 18. Check-in is at 8 a.m. with the first tee time at about 9 a.m.
The cost is $300 for a four-person team and that covers 18 holes of golf, two golf carts and a lunch featuring hamburgers and hot dogs for each team.
In addition, businesses or individuals may sponsor a flag on each of the holes for the scramble. The cost is $250 for each front-nine flag and $300 for the individual back-nine flags. Or, for $500, a sponsor can get a front and back flag with a complementary entry fee for one team.
Sponsors will get to keep the flags they purchase afterward.
Money will go toward needed equipment
Proceeds from the golf scramble will be used to purchase a golf cart for use at the camp, as well as for other initiatives, including an inclusive swing set and adaptive programs.
Founded in 1952 as a co-educational site where people with disabilities “can do” all kinds of traditional summer camp activities, the camp draws people from across the country to the 3,100-acre Touch of Nature Environmental Center, located about eight miles south of Carbondale just off Giant City Road.
Plans are underway for the 2020 camp season with nine different camp sessions, ranging from 6 to 13 days, on tap. The sessions are designed for people with various abilities and disabilities.
