Media Advisory – Teacher Education Program graduate pinning ceremony
A special pinning ceremony on Wednesday will recognize the newest graduates of Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Teacher Education Programs.
Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover the ceremony at 4 p.m., Dec. 11, in the John C. Guyon Auditorium at Morris Library.
Each of the graduates from the Teacher Education Programs (TEP) across campus have completed their educational requirements along with their student teaching, the final milestone along the pathway to becoming professional educators. Each of the graduates are individually recognized during the pinning festivities.
University faculty and staff will be in attendance along with the graduates’ family members and friends. In addition, special guests will include the cooperating teachers who supervised the students in their classrooms as the students demonstrated the lessons they had learned at SIU by instructing younger students.
Experiential learning is vital at SIU and while students complete the content classwork within the colleges hosting their respective majors, they began practicing the art of teaching with part-time clinical placements during their junior years.
After logging three semesters of part-time classroom teaching experience, the students devote their final semester to full-time student teaching, a task completed at numerous schools throughout the region. These new educators will now officially be “pinned” by the teachers they’ve served alongside with in diverse regional classrooms during their final SIU undergraduate semester.
A reception will be held along with the ceremony.
