‘Human Rights Day’ to look at Kashmir
A program at the SIU School of Law on Sunday will look at the situation involving the dispute in Kashmir.
The United Nations Association USA, Southern Illinois Chapter will celebrate U.N. Human Rights Day with a program from 4 to 6 p.m., in the law school’s lounge.
Gregory Erwin, a senior in agribusiness economics and SIU Model U.N. vice president, will present “An Overview of the situation in Kashmir and U.N. involvement.” Dr. Hashim Gazi, an assistant professor of Medicine at the SIU School of Medicine and currently serving as an interventional cardiologist at Heartland Regional Medical Center, grew up in Srinagar, Kashmir's capital city. He will speak about his experience relating to the conflict in Kashmir and his recent experiences of going to Kashmir to retrieve his parents.
The program is free and open to the public.
Human Rights Day, which is on Dec. 10, commemorates the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
