Retailers can learn business success strategies at upcoming SIU workshop
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Helping retailers become more successful is the focus of a free workshop at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Nov. 20.
The “Creating a Customer Experience (inside and out)!” workshop is from 7:45 to 9 a.m. at the Dunn-Richmond Economic Development Center, 1740 Innovation Drive in Carbondale. Anyone can attend the Illinois Small Business Development Center event for free. Breakfast is available and sign-in begins at 7:30 a.m.
Learn from an expert
Lyn Falk, president of RetailWorks Inc., an award-winning interior design, branding and consulting firm from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will be the guest speaker. She has been sharing her expertise with retailers and business professionals for more than three decades, helping them create retail environments that are purposeful, appealing, and productive – spaces which move people and sell merchandise.
Her experience and knowledge in retail design, business, science, consumer behavior and environmental psychology has proven beneficial in helping her clients not only reach, but surpass their goals and sales expectations. Falk has worked with more than 35 large industries, including Harley-Davidson, the Kohler Company, Mercury Marine, Miller Brewing Company, Road America and S.C. Johnson, as well as with hundreds of independent retailers.
“The Small Business Development Center is excited to have an award-winning retail consultant come and give insights on how business owners can increase sales for their stores,” Greg Bouhl, director of the Illinois Small Business Development Center, said.

Falk will offer a wide variety of ideas to help retailers make their businesses stand out and increase traffic, sales and profits.
Themes will include:
- Creating a wonderful, memorable customer experience.
- Ways to brand a building façade, inform customers about your business and create attention-grabbing window displays.
- Tips for choosing the right, cost-effective business furniture, fixtures, décor, signage and lighting.
- Methods for creating in-store focal point displays and merchandising store fixtures to garner customer attention.
