SIU’s Touch of Nature hosts final 2019 trail building day on Nov. 10
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Here’s your chance to play a vital role in building one of the premier biking and multi-purpose trails in the Midwest.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center is hosting a Bike Build/Trail Building day on Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the center, located about eight miles south of Carbondale on Giant City Road.
Everyone welcome
All individuals and groups are invited to come lend a land during the final trail building event of 2019.
Touch of Nature staff will provide the tools needed for the work, along with instruction regarding their safe and proper use. Gloves and eye/head protection will also be supplied.
Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and bring a water bottle and whatever snacks they may want.
Part of a big system
The November work session will focus on adding elements to the single-track portion of the trails. It’s all part of a larger project which will eventually encompass a 30-mile-long track system. The system is being created in a sustainable, durable and low-impact way for use by bicyclists and walkers. The trail system will give users a chance to stay active and explore the beautiful scenery near the Shawnee National Forest.
A variety of grants, combined with donations and the help of volunteers, is bringing the project to reality.

No advance signup is needed to join in the work session. Just show up and help.
