School of Art and Design’s Sculpture Fall Iron Pour, metalsmithing is Nov. 8-9
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Working with molten iron and metals can always liven up a fall day.
The power and strength of molten iron and metals will be on display at Southern Illinois University Carbondale as the School of Art and Design hosts its fall iron pour and metalsmithing conference, Nov. 8-9.

Pour will take place at the Sculpture Foundry Complex
The community has the opportunity to attend and participate in the event, hosted by Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School of Art and Design’s Sculpture Program, on Nov. 9.
The pour will be from noon until completion at the SIU Art Foundry, 1520-1560 W. Pleasant Hill Road, the white buildings at the intersection of Pleasant Hill Road and Evergreen Drive, across from the Evergreen Terrace Apartments.
There will be a COLAB/invitational exhibition reception at the Glove Factory from 5 to 7 p.m., Nov. 8.
Admission to both events is free. Participants can create a personalized scratch block to be cast during the pour, and several shapes and sizes will be available for sale. Scratch blocks are perfect for a first or casual foray into poured iron art. Visitors can scratch their own designs into the scratch block and let the metal experts pour iron. When the iron cools, your designed sculpture block will be ready for to take home.
Metalsmithing conference and demonstrations set
The Southern Illinois Metalsmiths Society, a registered student organization, will host their annual metalsmithing conference and demonstrations at the L. Brent Kington Studio, in the Pulliam Industrial Wing, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Nov. 9.
Daniel Randall, who studied metalsmithing at SIU Carbondale and who is an assistant professor in the School of Art Craft and Design at Tennessee Tech University, is the 2019 visiting artist. He will be demonstrating his vessel forming techniques.
In addition, there will be a reception for SIMS’ national juried student metalwork “Forge, Form, Fabricate” from 4-7 p.m., Nov. 8, at University Museum. Randall will present his lecture at 7 p.m. The museum exhibition runs Nov. 8 to Dec. 14.
Alumni, visiting faculty and students also participate
More than a dozen School of Art and Design alumni will be participating in the events, along with faculty or students from:
- Southeast Missouri State University.
- Tennessee Tech University.
- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
- University of West Virginia.
- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
- Washington University.
- Charles Community College.
