Media Advisory – Tree Walk on Tuesday at SIU Carbondale

Reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover an Oct.22 visit to Southern Illinois University Carbondale by about 170 area children who will participate in a tree walk and other activities.

Representatives of two SIU organizations will be orchestrating the event for the large group of children from Carruthers Elementary School in Murphysboro from 10 a.m. to noon.

The children will take a walk through parts of Campus Lake and Thompson Woods, learning to identify a variety of trees along the way. They’ll also take part in assorted tree-related activities and take in demonstrations of competitive outdoor flora-related events, presented by the Forestry Club on the lawn outside of the Agriculture Building.

The Tree Campus USA Advisory Committee, chaired by SIU Superintendent of Grounds David Tippy, along with the Forestry Club, a campus registered student organization, are organizing the tree walk event.

Throughout the morning visit, the children will be immersed in hands-on learning activities with SIU students and staff, providing many good opportunities for media to obtan engaging video, photographs and stories.
