Eight Salukis vying to be 2019 SIU Homecoming king and queen

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Voting is underway for the 2019 Southern Illinois University Carbondale homecoming king and queen.

Five women and three men are competing to reign over the 150th anniversary Homecoming celebration. The candidates submit applications and participate in interviews and students vote on the court.  Online voting continues through 8 a.m. Thursday.

Winners crowned during game

The contestants will ride in the Homecoming parade through the streets of downtown Carbondale beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. The coronation will be during halftime of the Salukis’ Homecoming football game against Youngstown State at  2 p.m. Saturday at Saluki Stadium.

Five vying for queen crown

The 2019 SIU homecoming queen candidates, in alphabetical order with their hometowns, years, and majors  are:

  • Meadow Ryann Drollinger, Floyds Knobs, Indiana, a senior psychology major with minors in communication studies and economics.
  • Kendra Flood, Montrose, a senior agricultural systems and education major with specialization in agricultural education, and a minor in crops, soil and environmental management.
  • Nekya Hall, Chicago, a junior criminology and criminal justice major with minors in forensic science and psychology.
  • Tori Rhone, Louis, Missouri, a senior biological sciences/pre-medicine major with minor in chemistry.
  • Natalie Lynn Sterling, Bloomington-Normal , a senior psychology and early childhood: child and family services major.

Three seek to be king

The 2019 king candidates are:

  • La’Royale Hunley, Chicago, a junior business management major with an entrepreneurship specialization and a minor in marketing, hospitality and tourism event management.
  • Brandon Morgan, Forest Park, a sophomore health care management major.
  • Colton M. Newlin, Marion, a senior psychology major with minors in sociology and criminology and criminal justice.

Homecoming 2019’s theme is “One Team, Saluki Dream: Celebrating 150 Years Strong” and activities are going on all week long. The complete schedule of events and additional information are available online.
