James Allen to deliver 2019 Emeritus Faculty lecture on Wednesday
CARBONDALE, Ill., — James S. Allen, vice president for academic affairs for the SIU system, will discuss next week how different constituencies have viewed the Statue of Liberty throughout its history.
Allen will present “The Statue of Liberty: Emblem for Social Discourse” at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 16, in Morris Library, Room 752-754. The lecture is an Emeritus Faculty Organization event.
Admission is free and the lecture is open to the public.
Allen recently finished a book that addresses the social discourse of civil society in France and the United States.
Has been associated with SIU for nearly 30 years
Allen returned to the role of vice president for academic affairs of the SIU system earlier this year; he previously held the position from 2015 to 2017. His history with SIU includes serving as associate provost for academic programs for five years; director of the university’s core curriculum for 12 years, and as professor of history for more than 28 years (from 1991 to this year) at SIU Carbondale.
Allen taught at the University of the California, San Diego and Phillips University before coming to SIU Carbondale in 1991.
