‘Open Hours’ training for ‘BigDawg’ available each Friday

Faculty and students working with faculty on research projects have an opportunity each Friday this month to learn more about ‘BigDawg,’ the university’s high-performance computing cluster.

The sessions are offered from 3 to 4 p.m. every Friday in the Office of Information Technology training lab, located in the Northwest Annex, Room A117. The entrance is rear of Building A with the maroon “Welcome” awning above the door.

During these sessions, qualified users — SIU faculty/researchers who are working on projects needing heavy computational power and students working with faculty on research projects— can apply for an account and/or VPN access, and then learn how to log on, submit a job, and install software on BigDawg. Those attending will be able to learn from other users and ask questions of experts.

This Friday, in addition to the open hour, XSEDE XCRI experts who are helping SIU plan configuration upgrades will be present.

Sessions for Oct. 18 and Oct. 25 do not yet have specific topics. For additional information, contact Chet Langin, information technology manager, at cl.research@siu.edu.
