by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A day of Halloween-time fun for all ages is coming to Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center later this month as the popular Haunted Hollow returns.

The 11th annual family festival is set for 1-4 p.m. on Oct. 27 at Touch of Nature, located about eight miles south of Carbondale on Giant City Road.

Many activities planned

A wide variety of activities are planned. The enjoyment includes a kid-friendly haunted house, a portable climbing wall, “frightening” foods, a haunted hayride, interpretive nature hikes and a variety of games. Participants can also hold snakes and lizards and check out assorted creepy crawlers and critters.

Accessible and appropriate for all

The Haunted Hollow activities take place at Camp 2 and are suitable for participants of all ages. The facility is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, too.

Because the event goes on rain or shine, participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather that day. Those attending are also welcome to wear costumes.

Save money by registering early

The advance registration deadline is 4 p.m. on Oct. 25. Early registration is $7 per ticket for those ages 14 and older and $5 each for children ages 6-13. Kids ages five and younger are admitted for free. Online registration is now open.

People can also pay and attend on Oct. 27. Admission then will be cash only, with tickets at the door $11 for those 14 and older and $7 for children ages 6-13. Admission for children ages five and younger is still free.

River Radio of Southern Illinois and Laborer’s Local 773 are this year’s community sponsors while SIU Credit Union and Paul Melzer’s Country Financial in Murphysboro are event sponsors.
