McLeod Summer Playhouse Hosting additional special auditions for area children

by Myah Gary

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The McLeod Summer Playhouse is offering an opportunity for ambitious young performers to audition for the upcoming musical “Gypsy.”

On May 23-25, Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s professional theater company will hold special auditions for area children to fill the featured roles of “Baby June’s Newsboys” in the musical. Young actors who can play boys ages 10-12 are welcomed to audition.

Set an appointment now

Auditions will be held on the SIU Campus at Altgeld Hall in Room 116. Audition slots are by appointment only. Performers must sing and dance well. Prepared singing or acting pieces are not necessary, as music and acting sides will be provided and taught at the audition.

All children auditioning must live or have housing with an approved guardian in the Southern Illinois area during the times of rehearsals and must have transportation to and from the rehearsal spaces in Carbondale. Parents and guardians are encouraged to become familiar with the play and the roles.

“Gypsy” production

“Gypsy,” considered by many critics as America’s greatest work of musical theater, has a book by Arthur Laurents, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and music by Jule Styne. It tells the story of the early life of famed stripper-celebrity, Gypsy Rose Lee, and her indomitable “Momma Rose.”

Auditions are specifically for the upcoming production of “Gypsy” this summer. Performances are set for July 12-14 and July 19-21.

To schedule an audition or for more information, please contact McLeod Summer Playhouse at 618-453-5741 or email mcleodsummerplayhouse@gmail.com.
