‘Lights Out’ across campus is Friday
Faculty, staff and student volunteers are invited to help the Saluki Energy Focus Group with its inaugural “Lights Out” event at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
The group will meet at the Sustainability Hub and then walk through various campus buildings, turning unused lighting off to conserve energy. The event should end about 7 p.m.
SIU Sustainability will calculate the energy savings and emissions savings using the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas equivalencies calculator. As an example, since spring 2016, the University of Illinois’ ‘Illini Lights Out’ initiative has saved more than $14,000 and prevented 119 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere just by turning the lights out one Friday night each month.
