School safety conference offers helpful insights on protecting kids

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A new conference focused on increasing school safety in small communities is coming to Southern Illinois University Carbondale on April 15.

Open to local parents, administrators and community members, the free conference offers professional insight from a variety of researchers, school administrators and SIU faculty members. The goal of the event is to explore important topics that may help to increase awareness and understanding of factors related to school safety.

The event is set for 4-6 p.m. on April 15 at the SIU Student Center Ballroom D. Provost Meera Komarraju will give an opening talk, with five other presentations to follow.

Presentations from diverse perspectives

The conference offers a variety of presentations from SIU faculty and local school superintendent, giving a unique depth to the event.

Some of the presentation topics include:

  • Bullying and related activities in rural schools (D. Kroner, professor of criminology and criminal justice).
  • Parents’ perception of school safety (H. Soliman and J. Koran, professor of social work and adjunct faculty in department of counseling, quantitative methods and special education).
  • School climate and school safety (M.L. Cashel, associate professor and program director of clinical psychology).
  • Safeguarding children while protecting due process of law (S.J. Macias, associate dean for academic affairs and associate professor of law).
  • School Safety 101 (S. Webb, superintendent for Goreville Community School).

Conference sponsors include the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Law. Local regional superintendents are also contributing to the event.
