Media Advisory- 4H Horse Bowl

Approximately 100 local students, ages 8 through high school, are gearing up for the annual Southern Region 4H Horse Bowl and Hippology Contest at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Agricultural Building March 30.

Similar to an academic scholastic bowl, this contest focuses on horse related subjects and provides youth with an opportunity to qualify for the state competition in April. All members are 4H Club members and divided into junior and senior groups.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with competitions lasting throughout the day. The hippology section is first, with the horse bowl following at 10 a.m. Both team and individual awards are at the end of the contest in the afternoon at the SIU Farms.

Local reporters, photographers and news crews are welcome to cover the activities and competitions. The horse bowl and final awards might offer valuable photo and video opportunities.

The goal of the event is to give 4H participants an educational and fun opportunity to compete and test their knowledge on subjects such as horse anatomy, tack and riding equipment, feeding and care of horses and much more. Part of both a state and national coalition, SIU is hosting one of the four competitions happening in the state this spring. Other venues include Lincoln Land College, Christion High School and Knoxville High School.
