Southern Illinois Law and Leadership Conference set for March 27

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois Law and Leadership Conference, set for March 27 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, offers the region’s education professionals and others the chance to strengthen leadership networks and school partnerships.

The conference, “Leading a New Era of Accountability,” gives principals, superintendents, school board members, students and other interested individuals the opportunity to come together for a day of professional development and networking. The conference takes place from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms.

Sessions including several timely topics 

The sessions will address a wide variety of topics including:

  • Current labor and collective bargaining issues.
  • Legislative updates.
  • Micro-credentials.
  • Student success.
  • Community and institution partnerships.
  • Technology and education.
  • School finance
  • Special education.
  • School leader paradigm.
  • The Freedom of Information, Open Meetings and Gift Ban Acts.

The opening session will feature a “Stump the Attorney” panel discussion where participants can pose any school-related legal questions to a panel of leading school law attorneys.

The conference will also include a keynote address by Brad Colwell, SIU system vice president for student and academic affairs. During the conference, Cowell will team with Gary Kelly, a clinical assistant professor at SIU and superintendent of Du Quoin Community School District, to present an update on educational administration and higher education programs at SIU Carbondale.

Conference registration is $80. Full-time SIU students pay a reduced fee of $50 while students in SIU’s Educational Administration and Higher Education pay $25.
