by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — There’s a trick to making math understandable and helping people comprehend and learn it. The 34th annual Conference on Teaching Mathematics is full of valuable information about doing just that for teachers, college students and anyone with an interest in math.

The conference, coordinated by Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Conference and Scheduling Services, is set for Feb. 21 at the Hancock Conference Center on the campus of John A. Logan College in Carterville.

Numerous experts participating

Nerida Ellerton and Ken Clements, internationally known mathematics teacher educators at Illinois State University, will headline the speaker presentations. They will lead participants in a series of activities designed to illustrate how to make school algebra interesting, understandable and meaningful. They will provide simple equipment and materials to enable each table to join in the demonstration.

In all, participants can choose from 30 different sections to attend during the three main sessions, in addition to the keynote address.

Other speakers include:

  • Jackie Murawska, Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) president.
  • Annie Forrest, ICTM president-elect.
  • George Reese, ICTM past-president.
  • Numerous other ICTM colleagues and classroom teachers from across the state.
