SIU’s inaugural Monster Dash set for Saturday

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Grab a costume and your running shoes and join the fun at the inaugural Monster Dash 5K at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Saturday.

Divisions for runners and walkers

The event features both a competitive division and a fun run, with both beginning on the walkway adjacent to Charlotte West Softball Stadium. The route winds through camps and returns to the starting spot. SoILL Racing will record time.

Competitive divisions are divided by age group, with separate classes for men and women.

Register for the SIU Monster Dash 5K or the fun run in the Student Recreation Center Alumni Lounge between 7:30 and 8:45 a.m. on Saturday. The cost is $30 for adults or $10 for youths age 17 and younger.

Commemorative race T-shirts will be available while supplies last for paid registrants. Costumes are optional for those participating in the race.

The Monster Dash and Fun Run begin at 9 a.m. First through third prizes will be awarded in each age group.

Children can join the fun

There is also a free 100-meter Kids Dash, open to all youth ages eight and younger. It will take place in the grass lot next to the softball stadium.

The Kids Dash starts at 10 a.m. and no registration is necessary.

Win for costumes

There will also be a free costume contest with prizes awarded for: best individual adult (age 18 and older), best group (two or more people), best youth (age 17 and younger).

Costume contest entries will be accepted on race day from 7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
