SIU’s Student Recreation Center offers two adult sports programs this summer

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Two special summer programs, both open to the public and university community, are proof that fun and fitness go hand in hand all year long at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Recreational Sports and Services.

Both programs are open to anyone age 18 or older.

Fitness training for all in June

The General Physical Preparedness (GPP) Training program meets throughout the month of June and it’s designed to help participants improve in every aspect of fitness.

Instructors Casey Macabulos and Nathan Shaw will direct a total body workout combining resistance and cardio training techniques to improve overall fitness and health. Teamwork is an important part of the class and participants will use free weights, stability balls, battle ropes, body weights, medicine balls, ladders, cones and TRX (total body resistance exercise.)

Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays in June

The class meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday in June. It will be held at the Court Side Fitness Studio in the Student Recreation Center.

Class size is limited

The class will have a minimum of eight and maximum of 12 participants so early registration is encouraged. The cost is $60 for SIU students, $65 for recreation center members or $75 for the general public.

Online registration is now available at www.rec.siu.edu.

Competitive sports tournaments planned

The center is also sponsoring four adult summer competitive sports tournaments. Registration opens June 4 and people need to sign up prior to the captains’ meeting for their respective sport. Teams are welcome to sign up together but individual “free agents” are also welcome to register for teams to be paired up by rec center staff.

SIU students and recreation center members can participate at no cost. The fee for anyone else is just $10 per sport, per person.
