SIU Women’s Club awards three scholarships

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Three Southern Illinois University Carbondale students are the recipients of scholarships from the Southern Illinois University Women’s Club. Mary McGee, Vicki L. Brown and Mikayla Stanfield received a total of $5,000 in financial assistance from the organization.

Awards honor SIU former “first ladies” and organization’s anniversary

During a special ceremony recently, the women received their awards. The scholarships are named in honor of two former SIU “first ladies” who strongly supported women in academics while a special 2018 scholarship recognizes the 80th anniversary of the SIU Women’s Club.

Here is a little information about the award recipients and their scholarships:

  • McGee, of Naperville, is the recipient of the Dorothy Morris Traditional Student Scholarship for $2,000. She is a senior psychology major with a minor in sociology and plans to attend graduate school to study higher education and student affairs.
  • Brown, of Coulterville, received the Joyce Guyon Non-Traditional Student Scholarship for $2,000. She is a senior healthcare management major and her career goal is to operate an efficient and productive facility that provides compassionate, quality care to patients.
  • Stanfield, of Louisville, won the special 80th Anniversary Scholarship for $1,000. She recently finished her junior year as a radiologic sciences major with concentration in MRI/CT scanning and chose this career field because imaging has helped save many lives.

Fitting conclusion to anniversary celebration

“Awarding these scholarships was a wonderful way to cap off the SIU Women’s Cub’s 80th anniversary celebration and we hope that the scholarships will have a lasting, positive impact on these students’ lives,” Laura Helsel, SIU Women’s Club president, said.

The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, career goals and aspirations, leadership experience, references and financial need.
