SIU's Kappa Alpha - Zeta Sigma earns national recognition

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Kappa Alpha Order – Zeta Sigma Chapter recently won a number of major awards recognizing the organization and its members for excellence. 

Top 10 percent in the nation

The fraternity received the Samuel Zenas Ammen Award for Chapter Excellence, presented to the top 10 percent of the nation’s Kappa Alpha Chapters. To earn the honor, a chapter must achieve a high level of excellence in all areas of chapter operations:

  • Academic programming
  • Academic achievement
  • Community service
  • Philanthropy
  • Public and fraternal communications/excellence in social media
  • Educational programming
  • Membership education
  • Chapter finances
  • Recruitment and chapter growth 

Representatives of the SIU fraternity received the award at Candler, Feller and Frampton Province Council meeting held recently in Georgetown, Ken. This was one of seven regional meetings taking place in spring 2018 across the country. 

Additional awards won

SIU’S Zeta Sigma chapter also claimed several other awards at the conference. They included:

  • Excellence in Educational Programming – given to two chapters in the region.
  • Outstanding Scholastic Achievement – awarded in recognition of the chapter members attaining a 3.0 GPA for consecutive semesters
  • Excellence in Social Media Communication
  • Excellence in Fraternal Communication

“We are proud of our awards, especially our Samuel Zenas Ammen Award, but we are even more excited to build on these successes in the coming year,” Joe Locher, a junior international affairs/German major from Springfield who serves as president of SIU’s Kappa Alpha Order – Zeta Sigma Chapter, said.
