Inventory tagging rules changes
A recent state rule change regarding the marking and inventory of university equipment will immediately result in tagging changes.
The changes are:
- All equipment with an acquisition cost of $1,000 or more will receive a numbered barcode tag. The previous level was $500.
- All equipment that is not considered a high theft risk with an acquisition cost between $100 and $999.99 will receive a blue non-numbered tag labeled “Property of Southern Illinois University Carbondale State of Illinois.” The previous level was $499.99.
All equipment considered a high theft risk with an acquisition cost of $100 or more will continue to receive a numbered barcode tag.
After January 1, 2018, Property Control will start removing numbered barcode tags from items that do not meet the new threshold. The new rule also allows equipment to be depreciated, which will result in removing thousands of items from inventory. Property control is now required to carry this equipment at a historic cost, but after these changes are implemented, the annual inventory process should be much less cumbersome.
An important reminder is that the definition of university equipment has not changed. Equipment is all tangible personal property of a non-consumable nature valued at $100 or greater. When coding equipment transactions, refer to the object code listing on the Administrative Information Systems website.
