UHP and LGBTQ Resource Center present ‘They Call Me Q’
CARBONDALE, Ill. – There’s a reason Qurrat “Q” Kadwani maintains a busy collegiate touring schedule. Her award-winning Off Broadway solo show, “They Call Me Q,” is entertaining, funny, lively and educational.
Kadwani comes to Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Oct. 30 as a guest of the University Honors Program, its Cultural Experiences and Diversity student group, and the LGBTQ Resource Center. Her show begins at 6 p.m. in the Student Center Auditorium. The event is free.
Kadwani describes “They Call Me Q” as “the story of a girl from Bombay growing up in the Boogie Down Bronx” and her struggles to respect the culture of her traditional parents and her desire to fit in to the Bronx culture where she lived. She becomes 13 different characters, including her parents, white teachers, Puerto Rican classmates and African-American friends, as she explores culture and identity.
The show is well-reviewed by The Village Voice, NY Theatre Guide and more, and Kadwani has won several prestigious awards. She is also the founding artistic director of eyeBLINK, a not-for-profit organization committed to promoting social change through theater, dance and special events.
