Expert will talk about the region’s mushrooms

Michael Kuo, an amateur mycologist who is an expert in the field of identifying fungi, will have two discussions this week on mushrooms.

Kuo will discuss mushrooms of Southern Illinois and their ecological importance today (April 20). The presentation is at 7 p.m. in Life Sciences II auditorium. A book signing and reception will follow.

Kuo will also present “How Mushroom Taxonomy Gets Done These Days,” the modern methods of fungal taxonomy, at 11 a.m., Friday, April 21, in Life Sciences II, Room 423. There will be an afternoon hike, weather permitting.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Kuo, an English instructor at Eastern Illinois University, is the principal developer of MushroomExpert.com and of several books on mushrooms and morels.

The events are sponsored by the SIU chapter of Sigma Xi and the Southern Chapter of the Illinois Nature Plant Society.
