‘The Big Event’ collection drive underway

Faculty and staff can get a jump on the biggest one-day service project in the university’s history by donating a variety of items to help students and children.

A collection drive through Friday, March 31, is seeking professional clothing for the College of Business “Career Closet,” food and toiletries for the SIU Food Pantry, and books for the Carbondale Public Library.

A list of suggested donations is here.

Collection bins are at Morris Library, the Student Center, the SIU School of Law, the Student Recreation Center, Carbondale Main Street, the Newman Center, 715 S. Washington St., and the Wesley Foundation 816 S. Illinois Ave., both in Carbondale.

Nearly 1,000 Salukis will say “thanks” to the community for its ongoing support on April 1. The university’s inaugural  “The Big Event: A Saluki Day of Service” will take place at numerous on- and off-campus locations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hundreds of students, along with faculty and staff members, are volunteering their time and energy to help non-profit agencies and organizations and the people they serve throughout the greater Carbondale area.

Updates of the day’s activities will be posted, using #TheBigEvent, on Twitter @SIUC, as well as on Instagram and Snapchat @ThisIsSIU.
