Recreation center to offer ‘Fitness Plus’ program

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale wants to help with those resolutions for the new year by not only getting in shape, but learning a new skill with a “Fitness Plus” program.

The activities include boxing, fusion belly dance, salsa dancing, social dancing, tennis, Thai boxing and women’s self-defense. The instructor-led classes will be at the Student Recreation Center through mid-April and are open to the public. Student Recreation Center membership is not required, although there is a small discount for recreation center members.

SIU Extended Campus and the Student Recreation Center are offering the instructional recreational programs.

The activities, along with meeting times, dates and locations are:

Boxing: 5-6:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 6 through April 19. Recreation Center Martial Arts Studio.

Fusion Belly Dance: 7-8 p.m., Mondays, Feb. 6 through April 17. Recreation Center Dance Studio.

Introduction to Social Dance: 6-7 p.m., Wednesdays, Feb. 8 through April 19. Recreation Center Dance Studio.

Level Up Social Dance:  7-8 p.m., Wednesdays, Feb. 8 through April 19. Recreation Center Dance Studio.

Salsa Dancing: 7-8 p.m., Tuesdays, Feb. 7 through April 18. Recreation Center Dance Studio.

Shotokan Karate:  6-7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 7 through April 20. Recreation Center Dance Studio.

Tennis:

  • Ages 6-11 -- 9-10 a.m., Saturdays, Jan. 14 through Feb. 25. Recreation Center Gym.
  • Ages 12-16 – 10-11 a.m., Saturdays, Jan. 14 through Feb. 25. Recreation Center Gym.
  • Adult – 9-10 a.m., Thursdays, Feb. 9 through April 20. Recreation Center Gym.
  • Thai Boxing: 6:30-8 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 6 through April 19. Recreation Center Martial Arts Studio.
  • Women’s Self Defense: Thursdays, Feb. 9 through April 20. Recreation Center Mat Studio.
