Tours of artists’ studios set for Oct. 21

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers a behind-the-scenes peek at artists’ studios during its annual Open Studio, set for Oct. 21.

Faculty, students and guests may tour the studios -- all of them or just a select few-- to see the facilities and preview some student work.

The tour starts at the Foundry at 3 p.m. The Foundry complex includes two, large metal buildings at the corner of West Pleasant Hill Road and Reservoir Road (between Evergreen Park and U.S. Highway 51). The Foundry complex allows for ferrous and nonferrous metal-casting techniques. Students may use concrete pads and an adjacent grass and wooded area to display large sculpture.

The next stop is Pulliam Hall at 3:30 p.m. The Industrial Wing is home to the ceramics, glass and metalsmithing and blacksmithing programs. The Design Wing is home to communication design and industrial design and includes the Subtractive and Additive Maker Laboratory.

The tour of the Glove Factory begins at 5 p.m. The Glove Factory studio used to be the Good Luck Glove Co.  Now it is home to the Surplus Gallery, a woodworking shop, welding area, classrooms and studio space. The Glove Factory is at 432 S. Washington Ave.

The tour ends at the Surplus Gallery in the Glove Factory with a faculty exhibition and a cookout at 6 p.m.
