SIU to host competitive high school marching band event

by Andrea Hahn

CARBONDALE, Ill. – It’s all about the marching bands at Music and Motion.

The School of Music Department of Bands and Undergraduate Admissions at Southern Illinois University Carbondale host the educational and competitive high school marching band event this year on Oct. 15 in SIU’s Saluki Stadium. Gates open and ticket sales begin at 9:30 a.m. Bands begin performing at 10 a.m.

Hundreds of high school marching band members will represent their schools to compete for top honors. Each band has 15 minutes to perform for the audience and a panel of nine judges. Awards go to percussion, drum major and color guard as well as an overall grand champion trophy. A non-competitive option is available for those schools that want the judges’ feedback but without entering the competition.

George Brozak, associate director of bands and director of athletic bands, including the Marching Salukis, said the event is an important educational vehicle for area marching bands. He noted that the Marching Salukis will also take to the field during the event.
