SIU offering ‘Life Long Leisure Programs’

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Are you searching for a new hobby, skill, or the opportunity to get in shape this fall? Southern Illinois University Carbondale is offering a number of “Life Long Leisure Programs” starting this month.

The activities include boxing, fusion belly dance, karate and women’s self-defense. The instructor-led, nine-week classes will be at the Student Recreation Center through mid-November and are open to the public. Student Recreation Center membership is not required, although there is a small discount for recreation center members.

SIU Extended Campus and the Student Recreation Center are offering the instructional recreational programs.

The activities, along with meeting times, dates and locations are:

Boxing: 5-6:30 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 12 through Nov. 16. Recreation Center Martial Arts Studio.

Fusion Belly Dance: 7-8 p.m., Mondays, Sept. 14 through Nov. 16. Recreation Center Dance Studio

Kickboxing: 5:30-6:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 13 through Nov. 17. Recreation Center Martial Arts Studio.

Salsa Dancing: 7-8 p.m., Tuesdays, Sept. 13 through Nov. 15. Recreation Center Dance Studio.

Shotokan Karate:  6-7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 13 through Nov. 17. Recreation Center Dance Studio.

Thai Boxing: 6:30-8 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 12 through Nov. 16. Recreation Center Martial Arts Studio.

Women’s Self Defense: Thursdays, Sept. 15 through Nov. 17. Recreation Center Mat Studio.
